These colourful framed hand-painted Indian horoscope paintings originate from Rajasthan and date to the early 20th century, around the 1920s. Such works were traditionally produced by astrologers and temple scribes, combining sacred imagery with handwritten astrological script to represent elements of Hindu cosmology and personal destiny.
At the centre of the composition is a circular astrological diagram painted in soft natural pigments, divided into segments and inscribed with Devanagari characters relating to planetary or zodiacal influences. A stylised divine face appears at the centre of the wheel, emphasising the spiritual dimension of astrology within Hindu belief. Above this appears a winged celestial figure surrounded by script, while the lower section features a sacred conch shell (shankha), a symbol strongly associated with Hindu ritual and with the god Vishnu.
The painting is framed by decorative borders and presented in a rustic hand-painted wooden frame with a twisted green vine motif. With its rich colours, symbolic imagery and traditional calligraphy, it is both a fascinating cultural artefact and an attractive decorative piece reflecting Rajasthan’s long tradition of devotional and astrological manuscript painting.
