Gilt Black Lacquer Chinese Export Table Cabinet - Early 19th Century

This superb gilt black lacquer jewellery cabinet was made in Canton for export during the early 19th century. Crafted for wealthy European and American buyers, it exemplifies the exquisite artistry of the Qing dynasty export trade. The doors are decorated with finely painted gilt chinoiserie panels, framed by scrolling foliage borders, and open to reveal an elegant arrangement of drawers designed for jewellery and precious objects.

Each drawer is richly decorated with delicate gilt floral sprays, highlighting the fine craftsmanship and attention to detail. The cabinet stands as a remarkable example of Canton export lacquer, a fragile art form that rarely survives in such fine condition. Export wares of this quality €“ including tea caddies, games boxes and cabinets €“ were highly fashionable in the Georgian period.
