The Story

This unusually short standing Buddha originates from Burma (Myanmar) and dates to the Mandalay period, crafted in the early 20th century, circa 1930s. Figures from this period are celebrated for their refined proportions, serene expressions, and richly decorative surfaces, reflecting the final flowering of traditional Burmese Buddhist sculpture before the mid-20th century.

Carved from teak and finished with original gilding, the Buddha is depicted wearing traditional Burmese monastic robes, delicately adorned with inlaid coloured glass decoration that catches the light and adds subtle vibrancy to the surface. The facial expression is calm and contemplative, with downcast eyes and softly modelled features typical of Mandalay-period aesthetics. Gentle wear to the gilding and glass inlay enhances the sense of age and devotional use.

The figure stands upon a carved lotus base, symbolising purity and enlightenment, and is mounted on a later teak wood pillar base, providing stability while allowing the sculpture to be displayed to full effect. A beautifully balanced and spiritually resonant piece, well suited to both private contemplation spaces and curated interiors.
