The Story

This majestic tribalĀ panel comes from Nagaland, North East India. Totems were found in two areas of Naga villages - either side of the entrance to the village or inside the morung (mens dormitory).Ā

The panel is carved from a single piece of wood from theĀ hollock tree (terminalia myriocarpa) also known as the East Indian almond tree. It has abstract depictions of skulls at its top.Ā

Nagaland is a relatively inaccessible and unexplored area of India which borders Myanmar. The people live in villages set throughout the jungle and until the introduction of Christianity in the 1960's, the people of Nagaland were headhunters, regularly going to war with other nearby villages.
